Learn more about the Golden Retriever.
24-045 Spam is a 1-year-old female Golden Retriever with a heart as golden as her coat. She was surrendered by a service organization due to medical needs that required ongoing care they couldn’t provide. Her medical story is long and ongoing, but in short, she is a special needs dog born with a liver shunt: abnormally-formed vessels allowed normal blood, which drains from the digestive system, to bypass the liver, where it would usually be detoxified, and flow directly into the systemic circulation. This condition results in an under-developed liver, a deficient protein supply, and abnormal fat and protein metabolism. Surgery to repair this condition, a procedure called intrahepatic coil embolization, opened up the vessels so her liver would work properly; the surgery was a success. Here’s where Spam’s story turns into a fairytale! The very veterinarian who began Spam’s medical journey has now become her forever home! For the past four months, Spam has been thriving with her new family, who have gotten to know her playful, spirited personality. As they share: Despite her medical issues, she still has a lot of puppy energy! And what a clever girl she is! Spam adores her toys, especially a rubber frisbee that she’s figured out how to wrap around other toys so she can carry two at once. Sometimes she does this while sitting on her favorite outdoor toy, the Jolly Ball. Of course, every journey has its challenges. Spam’s biggest one? Convincing her feline brother to be her best friend and to play with her all the time! Spam also has some unique talents . The adopters related: We’ve discovered she’s an exceptional belcher, especially after meals. It’s clear that Spam has found the perfect home filled with love and laughter. As her family says: Spam is a sweet, funny girl, and we’re so lucky she came into our lives.
